06/20/2008 - Lester Bruns
Funeral Services for Lester Bruns, age 83, of Rushville, NE will be Friday, June 20, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Rushville’s St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Wittrock officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 7:00 PM at Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville, NE.
Lester was born north of Rushville on the family ranch on July 22, 1924, to Daniel and Delia (Tiensvold) Bruns. Lester attended country school and graduated from Rushville High School in 1942. He was baptized on September 4, 1924 and confirmed on April 27, 1941 at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rushville.
Lester entered the army in May of 1944 and returned home in June of 1946. He earned many medals and honors throughout his tour of duty. Lester was awarded two Bronze Starts and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was one of the soldiers who pulled open the gated at Dachau, Germany, prison camp liberating American and British prisoners. Lesters’s story was printed in the Badge, Rainbow Division newspaper, in the spring of 2003.
Lester entered into Holy Matrimony with Geraldine Mae Cech of Clinton, NE on April 8, 1948, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rushville. To this union four children were born: Sharon 1949, Gerald 1950, Vickie 1955 and Judy 1956. They farmed and ranched east of Rushville until retirement in 1994. Lester and Gerry traveled many miles and wintered in Texas and Arizona from 1988 top 2004.
Lester enjoyed travel, woodworking, fishing and family, especially all of his grandchildren. Lester was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #161, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Rainbow 42nd Division.

Wife- Geraldine of Rushville, NE. Sons- Gerald and Sandy of Culbertson, MT. Daughter- Sharon and Lloyd Kearns of Hay Springs, NE; Vickie and Keith Retzlaff of Hyannis, NE; Judy and Ben Janssen of Rushville, NE.
Brother- Harlow and Maryellen Bruns of Hinckley, MN.
Sister- Jerene Heesacker of Manderson, SD.
Grandchildren- 14
Great Grandchildren- 13
Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs is in charge of arrangements.
